Since 1989, Shepard has been making art inspired by the iconography of popular culture, commercial marketing and political messaging. The worldwide Obey campaign begun with a sticker with pro-wrestler Andre the Giant and the word ‘obey’. Using sarcasm and reverse psychology, Shepard wants people to take their life in their own hands and question their surroundings. The Obey campaign originated in the Do It Yourself culture of skateboarding and punk rock.
